Peru
Peru is the third-largest country in South America and a land of superlatives: the majestic Andes with numerous peaks exceeding 6,000 metres (including Huascarán at 6,768 m), the vast rainforests of the Amazon lowlands, and the arid coastal plains along the Pacific – all combined in a truly unique way.
The country is rich in history. This is where the Inca civilisation developed, whose legacy (e.g. Machu Picchu, Cusco) is world-famous. Even older cultures left impressive traces, including the mysterious Nazca Lines and the monumental pyramids of the Moche civilisation.
Peru is home to a diverse population: Quechua and Aymara communities in the highlands, indigenous peoples of the Amazon, descendants of Spanish colonists, as well as immigrants from Asia and Europe – a mix that is clearly reflected in its culture and cuisine. The capital Lima lies on the Pacific coast and is renowned for its gastronomy, which is why Peruvians proudly claim to serve the most authentic ceviche and the most aromatic pisco sour. Peru fascinates with an impressive combination of natural wonders – from Lake Titicaca to the Colca Canyon – and cultural richness, making it an absolute highlight in South America.

Good to know
Andean peaks, the Amazon and the Pacific coast – Peru offers extreme landscapes and remarkable cultural diversity. Home of the Inca (Machu Picchu) and a world-renowned cuisine, it is a fascinating destination full of history and natural wonders. Ideal for tailor-made journeys or guided small-group tours.
Flight connections
Peru is easily accessible by air from Europe, North and South America. The main international hub is Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima (LIM). Direct flights operate from Madrid with Iberia or LATAM, from Paris with Air France, among others. From German-speaking countries, flights usually require a connection. From North America, there are numerous direct flights (e.g. from Miami, New York, Houston). Regional flights connect Peru with cities such as Santiago, Bogotá and Buenos Aires. Google Flights is a helpful tool for searching routes and prices.
Entry requirements
Citizens of many countries (including the EU, Switzerland and the USA) can enter Peru visa-free for up to 90 days (up to a maximum of 183 days per year). Passports must be valid for at least six months upon entry. A return or onward ticket may be required. Binding information is provided by official authorities or embassies.
Best time to travel
Peru can be visited year-round, but the best travel time varies by region: the Andes and highlands (e.g. Cusco) are ideal during the dry season from May to October, the Amazon region is most pleasant from June to September, and coastal beach areas are best from December to March. April and October are considered good shoulder seasons.
Safety
Peru is generally a good country to travel in, but political crises may occasionally lead to protests or roadblocks. Petty crime is more common in large cities, particularly in Lima, Arequipa and Cusco. Caution is advised when using taxis, in bars and in crowded places. Travellers should consult official travel advisories and stay informed about the current situation.
