Argentina

Argentina is a land of superlatives and contrasts: towering Andean peaks with Mount Aconcagua (6,960 m, the highest mountain in the Americas), endless pampas with gauchos and cattle herds, subtropical rainforests surrounding the thundering Iguazú Falls, and the icy glaciers of Patagonia such as the famous Perito Moreno. Stretching almost 4,000 km from the tropical Gran Chaco steppe in the north to Tierra del Fuego in the south, Argentina offers a journey from hot jungle landscapes to the polar winds of the southernmost tip of the continent.

The capital Buenos Aires is a world metropolis full of elegance, where tango melodies drift through the streets of San Telmo and European boulevards meet a Latin American heartbeat. In the “Cultura Porteña”, Italian, Spanish and Creole influences merge into a unique urban identity that shapes the city’s vibrant way of life.

Argentina is also Maradona and Messi, pure football passion filling the stadiums, Malbec wine from Mendoza, folklore in Salta and whale watching in the Golfo Nuevo. Visitors can expect breathtaking natural wonders – from the colourful mountains of the Quebrada de Humahuaca to the stark beauty of the Patagonian steppe – as well as the warm hospitality of Argentinians and their love of asados (barbecues) and, of course, tango.

Good to know

Argentina is the second-largest country in South America. It combines vibrant metropolises such as Buenos Aires with highly diverse landscapes – from tropical rainforests in the north to Patagonian glaciers in the south – whether individually planned or as small-group add-on tours.

Flight connections

Argentina is easily accessible by air. Buenos Aires (Ezeiza) is served by direct flights from Europe. There are also direct connections from North America, for example from Miami and New York. Numerous scheduled flights connect Argentina with neighbouring countries. Google Flights is a useful tool for searching routes and prices.

Citizens of many countries (including EU states, Switzerland and the USA) can enter Argentina visa-free for up to 90 days as tourists. Other nationalities require a visa in advance. Important: reliable and up-to-date information is provided by Argentine embassies and official authorities.

Argentina can generally be visited year-round. The subtropical north (e.g. the Iguazú region) is hot throughout the year, central Argentina has a temperate climate, and Patagonia is best visited during the southern summer (November–February).

Argentina is generally considered a relatively safe travel destination, although crime rates are higher in large cities (especially petty crime). The political and economic situation is considered tense, with possible protests or strikes. Travellers are advised to take standard precautions and consult official travel advisories for current safety information.

No mandatory vaccinations are required for Argentina; however, standard vaccinations (e.g. tetanus, diphtheria, polio) and hepatitis A are recommended. In parts of the country, particularly in the north, there is a risk of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya or yellow fever, so effective mosquito protection is advisable. HealthyTravel provides up-to-date medical advice and vaccination recommendations.
